Star Wars: Battlefront 2 - anyone playing?

Post by Bakhtosh »

I'm a Star Wars fan. I love some of the new games, and watching some of the gameplay and cutscenes for Battlefront 2, this looks like something I'd enjoy. I really liked the Mass Effect games, but I'm not going to be able to handle the twitch style of FPS like a lot of games.

So before I drop a big dime on this game, what is the combat like? Is the single player combat easy enough for an old gamer to enjoy?

I was really looking forward to playing a single player FPS SE campaign. Unfortunately, all the reviews I’ve read have said that the single player campaign is both short and extremely underwhelming. The bulk of the game is the MP stuff, which seems to have its own set of big problems as well.

Hence why I’ll only be buying it when it’s on sale for $10 in a year.

Its basically a mp shooter like Team Fortress and the Battlefield games. I love shooters and the team shooters but really disliked the first game and this seems more of the same. I tried watching some streams of it and found it so boring I had to leave the channels. I watched a few streams on it and all agreed the ground combat was broken but the space stuff was fun. To each his own and I have no idea what is wrong with the ground stuff.

If you want a good Star Wars game with story then I say try the Force Unleashed games. Im not sure why so many dissed them as they are good games with a good story and great graphics. I had a lot of fun with both of them and finished them both. But a controller is really needed to get the most from them.

I have it for the PS4.

I bought the one released a few years ago and loved it. I am not a big shooter fan by any stretch and suck, since my reflex just suck in shooters. BUT, i still had a blast with it.

I have mixed feelings on this. I've spent say 5-8 hours with it and only in the MP galactic conquest map. The combat is the same feel, so its along the same lines there. This time you have 3 star cards you can use.

The one thing that sucks is improving the characters that you have. IT SUCKS. It just looks like a ginormous grind to get stuff. I am hopeful they stream line a lot more of it. Because its convoluted and really not playe friendly. Point in case you have to grind credits to buy a loot crate (4K credits) and you get about 95-375 per galactic conquest game. Now in those loot crates you'll randomly get 1-2 star cards and they could be an emote, or a character that's already locked (i got Luke who costs 10K) and it might not be a class you are really into. However you can craft the star cards you need once you hit certain levels and such in that class. They really, really need to fix this, because its straight up pay to win right now. They are aware of the issue and I am hopeful it becomes more player friendly.

Let me repeat the way you improve your character as its currently structured, sucks....sucks...sucks...sucks. Do not take this lightly. Its convoluted, messy and quite player unfriendly. It will take some serious play time to open up all the characters and really level up the characters and classes you have. Be eyes wide open if you go ahead and purchase this.

Gameplay i think its fun, i do like the added classes...assault, heavy, officer(support/heals) & specialist (snipersish ). They did make some changes where the more points you get in a game (think play objectives) you can then "buy" a more "super class later in that game. These points dont carry over. So if you kick ass and accumulate 6K points you can play lando or han solo; or you can spend 600 to buy a ship. I like that diversity to the game so people aren't camping the jedi token spawn.

I think if you can ignore the star card grind and just focus on the mindlessness of the MP matches you can find some fun in it. If you have refined tastes in shooters, this probably isn't for you.

Be happy to take any questions you have. I do intend on playing more of it, its the type of mindless fun i need but I also am not expecting much of it. IF they dont fix their character improvement structure, i'll probably sell it back to amazon or something.

There was a massive revolt on r/gaming and thousands of pre-orders were cancelled because of the loot crate system. It was calculated that it'd cost $2000 or so to get everything. One European country--Belgium I think--was going to investigate it as gambling. In any case, the revolt led to Disney's CEO calling EA's CEO due to the bad publicity. They then dropped the pay to buy loot crates functionality but also crippled the in-game rewards. Most people think they'll go back to pay to win after the movie has been out a few months. Either way that was enough to scare me off. Not worth paying full price for a broken slot machine.

Id love to see Disney kick EA's ass. Someone needs to.

Its so crappy that EA started out back in the day with good intentions and helping promote their devs and now days all they are are a greedy power company hell bent on simply churning out stuff to rip you off.

Absolutely. I saw all of that, but decided to take the plunge anyway. I knew it was gonna be like this, so I'm not mad or anything. I just like the mindless shooting bits to be honest. It takes zero thought and is a pleasant escape from reality for me currently. How long I'll stay...who knows. But i hope, hope, hope they add a better leveling up system and that they do reward those who took the plunge early in some fashion.

Yeah, the game itself is really fun, but the progression system is godawful even with the pay-to-win microtransactions removed. Instead of "Pay $5 to maybe get a step closer to the unlock you want" it's now "play 5 hours to maybe get a step closer".

Space flying is crazy awesome. They could have made a standalone game with just the space combat aspects. Single player campaign is really fun but on the short side.

$9 (xbox deals with gold this week) will get me to take the plunge. 4k Star Wars for less than $10 - sold.

I played a lot of it on the PS4 andI actually enjoyed it quite a bit. If you ignore the progressions sytem, its got a lot of fun gameplay I think. I love Galactic Assault; i think that's what its called. But that's the main way I've been playing.

ALSO...wookie warriors, wookie warriors, wookie warriors. Get in one of them when you have the points. Thermal bomb go booyah!

I picked up Battlefront 2 when it was free on Epic, and just got around to trying it this week. I also like Shriv!

I've only played the single-player campaign, which is fantastic by single-player-campaign-tacked-onto-multiplayer-game standards. Those standards are extremely low, so overall I would rate it "pretty good." The storyline is good and the voice acting is stellar, and I love how it slots into the broader Star Wars universe. The actual gameplay is pretty mediocre, but I can see how it could be great in multiplayer. I'll have to try that this week.

Multiplayer is very good. It's Battlefield-esque, with classes and objectives and whatnot. The most hilarious mode is definitely Ewok Hunt, which does not involve hunting ewoks but rather being hunted by ewoks.
