The new Warhammer 40,000 is an addictive and violent effort with a campaign that achieves a true sense of progression. The game has also a great cooperative mode and a multiplayer experience that is, again, its main goal. The cover system is an excellent addition to the series, while the ability to destroy cover is even better. The RPG elements and open-ended campaign add a lot of depth to the single player game.

I'm gone to school and work all day - intentionally left my PC running though just in case it came down.

You know...for a game that came out 6 years ago -- and I finished shortly after release, I am enjoying the hell out of a campaign replay. I just figured I'd play until the cards are unlocked, but I'm now about 25% though the original story. I bumped to (1) promote how awesome it still is and *2) remind people it's on sale for $5 though 7/20/15. Totally worth it. I played Chaos rising back in 2013 as part of my backlog project, but I completely forgot just how awesome the original is.

When I first played it I thought it was timeless.

It really is a fantastic piece of tactical gaming. Throw in WH40K and it's magic.

I wanted to keep playing (I'm about 40% done) but it just keeps crashing. Crashing in the menus. Crashing when paused. Crashing when fighting. It's completely random and it makes getting through missions impossible. I was 20 minutes into a great Tyranid stomp and paused the game to take the dog out. When I came back? Crashed to desktop. I did some poking around and there were suggestions to maybe tinker with the processor affinities, but in 2015 I don't have the energy to edit configuration files. I really wanted to play until the return of Thule (which I think is one of the Top 10 gaming moments for me) but with all the crashes I don't think it's possible.

The patch they released with the cards must have broke it. I played for a few hours a couple of weeks ago and all worked fine, literally had no problems on a Windows 8 machine. Today I am getting crashes. Also an odd experience I don't remember with my first play through years ago: one level has rain in it, but the raid is so heavy I can barely see my mouse cursor. Doesn't seem to be any options to lessen the rain or make the cursor bigger/brighter. That's disappointing.
For motivation and so Jeff V can make me look bad:

2009 Finals: Biking: 93 miles Running: 158 miles (I know it sucked, but I had a hernia most of the year)

I was thinking the same thing. There were (I think) two more patches that were released after the cards came out. I played for 5+ hours without a problem then these newer patches were released and it was ridiculous crashes. I also though the same thing during a mission with rain - it absolutely made the cursor disappear.

I'm sure you're not the only one, but I absolutely enjoyed DoW 2 more than the first one (which reminded me more of Company of Heroes). DoW 2 changed to faster play and added the lite RPG feel with the skill unlocks and gear.

Dawn of War 1 had more flavor, largely thanks to the unique buildings, but gameplay wise I vastly preferred DoW2.

DoW2 remains special to me because it is the only RTS I can think of that let me take a handful of units and through careful placement and strategy, keep them alive and win against a force ten times the size in multiplayer.

My proudest moment as an Eldar commander was inflicting over 80 casualties against an Ork and SM combo in multiplayer and only losing 7 units of my own.

I am not sure if it was last nights patch or one earlier. All I do know was that in June I played it a bunch and had no issues at all. I played yesterday and was getting hiccups. It hasn't been game breaking yet, but it is frustrating.

I have a 75% off coupon for Dawn of War 2 and a 75% off coupon for Dawn of War. I don't know how to trade them, but if someone knows and someone wants either of them (I own both of them) please post.

Yep, got it too. This has to be the push to bring attention to the game before they announce the next installment in the series.

I played some more over the weekend and it was glitch/crash free. No idea how that could be.

Thanks for mentioning this. You've prompted me to re-install the game, and I've been really enjoying it -- especially with the difficulty turned down to easy, so that I can zoom in and enjoy the animations. Dreadnaught killing a Wraithlord = so satisfying.

Does this mean the crashing was addressed? I was so frustrated I had to stop. It really is a beautiful game -- it definitely holds up and I think it should be listed as a classic. And let's be honest here -- Dreadnaught killing anything = satisfying. :D

The sync kills were always great in the Dawn of War games. One you should try to initiate is the Eldar Ranger melee kill animation. For whatever reason, one of Relic’s artists spent probably a good full day’s work making it look awesome when most people will never see it.

DoW1 had some great ones too. If the Eldar Bonesinger (builder) ever engaged in melee she would pull out a giant sword almost as tall as she was and go to town on units. If I recall, it actually did more damage than the Avatar, albeit with much lower hit points.

An early builder rush with Eldar was a known strategy. Their builders were insanely powerful in melee. Was probably designed as rush defense but turned into it's own rush. They had to be micro'd though because they would only attack one target and then stop (after the target was dead). You couldn't set them to attack and just let them go.

If I remember correctly, 3-4 builders could destroy most bases if caught off guard. It was an all or nothing strategy though, and those kind of suck.

I believe it. My favorite tactic in that game was to research base cloaking and teleportation. Then I would teleport a Bonesinger either directly into the enemy base or slightly behind it and build a webway gate to unleash all my units. If not immediately spotted you could teleport unit construction buildings in with you.

My finest moment was one time I had started construction of an Avatar before attempting the teleport maneuver. Right before it finished, I set the Aspect Portal to teleport into the enemy base. As soon as it finished warping in, the Avatar finished construction and spawned in the center of the enemies’ base. He rage quit almost immediately.

My favorite DOW1 tactic was chaos marines cloaked, get them into enemy base and summon/teleport the demons there. Or space marines deep striking enemy base after cloaked scouts got there.

Most memorable game: 2v2 - we find 1 enemy and got him out. My ally was getting hammered hard by the other guy though. I had a fully researched/built up base. Ally built an HQ in my base. We were playing destroy all HQ's to win. My ally and I kept going around capping strat points and building HQ's and mini-bases, cause he couldn't get his army really built back up and I am not a good enough player to stop the other guy - he micro-managed his army far better than I.

His only fault - built one HQ. Cloaked chaos marines, summoned their demon, teleported in the other demons, got more cloaked space marines. Eventually took his HQ out even though he'd fully destroyed my built up base. He just couldn't find our HQ's and destroy them all fast enough. If he'd built another HQ (or 2 or 3...) and capped more points, he would have beaten both of us.

And yes, Dreadnaught killing anything = one of the most satisfying things ever to watch in a video game for me personally. I also tend to really like most of the intro movies for these games (1 and 2).
